Manish Sutar (B.1981)

This young artist from Mumbai has participated in several group shows held at prestigious venues such as the Jehangir Art Gallery, Mumbai and Chitramayee State Art Gallery, Hyderabad since graduating in Drawing and Painting from the L.S.Raheja School of Art, Mumbai in 2003.

Manish's works reflect his relatonship with his environment as he captures the mundane happenings of the average layperson caught up in the hustle and bustle of meteropolitan life. Focusing on the journey in and out of the city, Manish captures a moment in the life of the lonely traveller, sunk deep in thought, reading his paper, or the life of the bus conductor, who has become like an accessory to the vehicle that sustains him.
Though Manish's works are somber in nature, he yet tries to convey the importance of the simplest objects in bringing security to the individual. His human subjects are superimposed on back drops of bus tickets or empty seats, signifying the importance of both objects to the individual during his journey. His solo figures also take on a life of their own, trapezing of seats or dancing out of joy of having the available space to do so. His figures thus become emotionally charged, enabling the viewer to relate and empathize with the subject, and with the feeling of joy and relief as one experiences when one finds space for oneself in the claustrophobic and imposing world of metropolitan cities.
The artist has used predominantly water colour on arches paper in his 2008 collection, using acrylic paint sparesly to highlight certain aspects of his work.

Manish has won the Best Composition Award in the Annual show of L.S. Raheja and certificate of Merit by the Bombay Art Soiety. His works can be found private art collections and a few major Banks in Mumbai, Bangalore, Kenya, England and Germany.
