Jayashree Chakravarty was born in Tripura, a North Eastern State of India. She has had a very extensive and colorful art background. Beginning in West Bengal, Chakravarty received her first training as an artist from Shantiniketan; she went on to attended the M.S.University in Baroda, completed her post-graduate in 1980. She eventually left India in 1990, to attend the 'Ecole d' Art', of the Aix-en-Provence in France and stayed on till 1995.
In her earlier days, Jayashree Chakravarty was known for her use of bright colours and romanticized figures of men and women; this phase was reflective of her training from Baroda. However, after her stay in France, her style has changed dramatically. Chakravarty's paintings began to take on more abstract forms, her brush strokes grew thicker, and her use of color changed to incorporate more somber hues such as pale blues and earthy browns. Despite the transformation in her style however, man and nature as subjects remain a predominant aspect in all her work.
The intent now behind Chakravarty's work is to communicate with as large an audience as possible,to cross cultural barriers and reach out to people through her art and imagery. The imagery and elusive quality about her works allows her to achieve this aim.
"My paintings are like a personal diary. I have been able to reach out to those who have little to do with my personal life and make them identify with my deeply felt imagery." - Jayashree Chakravarty
Jayashree Chakravarty has exhibited her works throughout India, the U.K. and the U.S. Some of her solo shows include 'The Mind Is Its Own Place,' at the Bose Pacia Modern in New York, in 2000; Thoughts Ricochet at the Vadhera Art Gallery of New Delhi, India in 2000; and at CIMA Gallery in Kolkata, India, in 1999.
