Chippa Sudhakar (B.1967)

"Every youngster who passed out of local art college invariably aspires to go to Baroda for doing some specialization in their respective disciplines. These young lads' ends up in a myth and they dissapear in the crowd. Chippa Sudhakar is one who sustained his presence not only in local art scene but elsewhere with a determination and with a great consistency pursuing the creative endeavor while practicing in the etching techniques". ~ K. Laxma Goud

Chippa Sudhakar completed his diploma in the Fine Arts (Painting) from the JNTU College of Arts in Hyderabad, after which he pursued his Post Diploma in the field of Graphics, specializing in Print Making from the M.S. University of Baroda.

Sudhakar is sculpture, painter and printmaker. His works are often relief compositions, where the artists utilizes materials such as copper & brass sheets coated over with lacquer on a wooden surface. Sudhakar does not confine himself to a canvas space either, but creates functional pieces of art such as chairs made from wood and painted over with acrylic and lacquer.

The artist is seen to be highly influenced by his surroundings and his education. The indigenous materials Sudhakar makes use of in his works bind him to local folk traditions, where paper mash and wood are commonly used, and painted brightly over with acrylic and lacquer. His calling as a printmaker is influenced by his native city of Hyderabad, a city that has been associated with print making for decades. It was in Baroda however that Sudhakar's work took on a dramatic transformation, one that was influenced by his meeting and working with the Spanish Printmaker J.Capa. Capa introduced Sudhakar to techniques that allowed for multiple hues in etching, a technique which he pursued avidly and that is still evident in his current works on wood.

The artist has come along way in a career that has lasted well over a decade. He has participated in various art camps and held over ten solo shows across India. He has received multiple awards in recognition of his work, including the Hyderabad Art Society award in 1994 and the Bendre-Hussain award for his sculptures in 2002.
