Laxman Aelay (B.1964)

Laxman Aelay is one of Hyderabad’s most dynamic contemporary artists. Prior to obtaining his BFA from the JNTU College of Fine Arts in 1996 and becoming a bonafide freelance artist, Aelay was a sign board painter and a much respected and coveted illustrator of Telegu books. He has dabbled in Art Direction on various film sets such as “Thodu” and “Nirantharam”, and worked as a Publicity Designer for revered director Ramgopal Verma, on the set of films like “Rangeela” and “Satya”.

Aelay’s works are continuously evolving, much like the artist himself. He has moved from his black & white drawings set amidst solid colour backgrounds, to a series of cross-hatch works, demonstrating his skill and agility as an artist. His latest collection of works are far more vibrant than any we have seen before. Consisting of mixed media collages, they are bold, colourful depictions of his favourite subjects, the native Telangana men and women from his native birthplace in the Nalgonda District of Andhra Pradesh.

Aelay’s has been holding one-man shows since 1999 and has won several awards over the last decade for his works, including an award from the Hyderabad Art Society in 2006. His works have already reached the roster board of prestigious auction houses such as Christies and he has shown widely across India and abroad. He has also travelled extensively, participating in art camps held at various locations in India and as far as Vietnam, Cambodia, Bangkok, Japan and even Egypt.
