Prabhakar Kolte was born in Nerur Par, Maharashtra. He received his diploma in painting from the Sir J.J. School of Arts of Mumbai in 1968. In 1972, he returned to J.J. to spend twenty-two years teaching art to the next generation of artists. He eventually retired in 1994 to devote himself to his own work.
Kolte is considered a contemporary master in today's world of Indian abstract art. His signature style of layering, coupled with his mastery over colour and ability to balance the elements, ensures his spot as one of India's most popular contemporary abstractionists.
Kolte's influences include artist the late Paul Klee, a Swiss who played with texture and was in love with colour. Kolte's early works were characterized by bold backgrounds, layered over with lighter forms and shapes. He also experimented outside the canvas, dabbling with instillation and the performative arts to test the boundaries of his abstract expression.
Today, he continues on his conceptual journey of discovering the relationship between space, colour and form. His works possess an enigmatic quality to them, mesmerizing the viewer in their complexity and depth.
Prabhakar Kolte has held multiple solo exhibitions and participated in various group shows in India and oversees throughout his career. He lives and works in Mumbai.
