B. Srinivas Reddy (B.1962)

Srinivas B. Reddy is one of the promising talents emerging from Hyderabad. He received his Diploma in Sculpture in 1986, from the Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University (JNTU) in Hyderabad. He was awarded a gold medal in his graduating year from the JNTU. Two years later he was honored with another gold medal, given to him by the Hyderabad Art Society (1988). Showing talent and promise, he was subsequently offered a scholarship by the Telugu University to continue his tenor ship in the Arts at the M.S. University of Baroda. He graduated with his post-Diploma in Sculpture from M.S. in 1990. He has gone on to receive numerous accolades over the years for his accomplishments. Srinivas has participated in solo and group shows, and has been selected by established galleries such as Jaamaat (Mumbai), Shrishti (Hyderabad), Vinyasa (Chennai) to name but a few. He was also chosen to participate in the Harmony Art Show organized by Reliance in 2001, 2004 and 2005.

Srinivas is a sculptor with a sensitive eye for human emotions. His series of bronze busts captured the faces of rural folk, depicting their transition from rural to urban environments and the changes in their social norms and values that came along with their migration. Some of his other works take on a more spiritual path, as seen in his large egg-shaped heads that are cast in bronze and fiber glass. The central concept of this collection is meditation, it is personified by a nearly invisible mouth in contrast to a huge egg like head, and epitomized by a symbol or figure of meditation ingrained into the centre of forehead. Reddy’s solid base color contrasts the central figure or symbol, drawing one’s gaze to the centre, almost in a meditative, trance-like fashion. The artist comments, “For me, everything emerges from a point, and the energy emanates from here in spiral form… I am greatly influenced by the power of meditation and Buddhism”.
