As a young lad Mrityunjay had only one passion, unlike other boys of his small village Dhaltitha by the river Ichhamoti in West Bengal, all he wanted was to be in communication with the flowing river waters and one with nature’s beauty. He painted his first painting with water colour, with the paint box gifted to him by his elder brother Sachin Mondal, also an artist of repute.
Encouraged by his family he joined the Art College in Kolkata to get formal training and this was the second phase in his artistic expression, somewhat moved from the earlier paintings that were inspired by the nature. Depictions of urban realities became more prominent in the artist’s work once he moved to a metro like Mumbai after his first show at the Jahangir Art Gallery. The water colors that captured the flow of river, now delineate the rising and ebbing waters of sea as also the widening gap between the class of rich and that of deprived ones. His last series centre's around the saints like the Buddha, Jesus Christ and Mother Teresa who sacrificed for the deprived class and human sufferings.
He topped throughout in his accdemic carrier and has won government scholarships from 1988 to 1992. He held solo exhibitions in the major metros and has regularly participated group shows since 1990.
