Ganesh Pyne is a senior artist who originates from Kolkata. He received his Diploma in drawing and painting from the Government College of Art and Craft,Kolkata, and initially worked with tempera on canvas, water color on paper and gouache. He takes inspiration from the Bangali folk and fairy tales, Baul music and also poetry of Octario Paz. And uses microcosmic figures to depict the forms in surrealist manner. The faces are without details and pale colors to give sorrowful feeling. The judicious juxtaposition bring out the pictorial beauty. The illustrations of new series on the Mahabhrata in a painterly style has brought him unexpected success.
He has participated in "25 years in Indian Art" and Triennales, New Delhi, "Freedom in India" organized by Max Mueller Bhavan, Kolkata. At international level his works were exhibited in Contemporary Art of Asia & Traveling Exhibitions of Indian Painting, Japan, Biennale Paris, Gallery Chemould, Zurich and other such shows in the major European cities. His works are presented at the Sotheby’s, Heart and Osian’s auction houses. He is awarded by the Calcutta Art Society and Birla Academy of Art and Culture. Geeti Sen has written a book on him, Ganesh Pyne: a Revelation, published in 1999. His works are collected by Gallery Surya, Germany and are with other private collectors. He works in Kolkata.
