Senior artist Jogen Chowdhury was born in Faridpur, Bengal in 1939. After receiving a diploma in Fine Art from the Government College of Art and Craft, Kolkata, he was awarded the French government scholarship for Post Graduation studies in Painting and he learnt Italian mosaic and fresco. He later studied etching at the Atelier 17, Paris.
After his return from Paris his figures were seen draped in cotton with sensuous symbolisms, the handling of the subject was typically whimsical and were often termed as Jogen Chowdhury’s vocabulary. For long time he painted with charcoal and ink on papers. Later he was influenced by Kali Ghat Paintings. However, throughout his inspiration are mainly drawn from common life incidences and people.
He has participated in major group shows held in Brazil, major cities in Europe, U.S. ,Turkey, Cuba, Japan etc. His works were presented at the major auction houses like Heart, Osian’s, Helpage India and Christie’s. Besides painting he has worked as designer at Chennai and appointed as curator of paintings at Rashtrapati Bhavan, New Delhi. He also served as Principal at Kala Bharati , Shantini Ketan.
He has been awarded by Academy of Fine Arts, University of Chandighar, College of Art and Craft, and Birala Academy of Art and Culture, Kolkata.
His works are in collection with museum in Japan, Boston, National Gallery of Modern Art, Birla Academy of Art and Culture, Kolkata.
