Manish Pushkale (B.1973)

Manish Pushkale was born in Bhopal and studied at the city's College of Art. He is known for his abstract works that are derived from Jain Philosophy, and as he claims, are like the chanting of 'mantras' in the Indian tradition.

He works with a piece of cloth that acts as a sponge and gives a lustre and shine to the canvas. It's as though the paintings are self referential and esoteric in their meaning. Pushkale subdues his colours into dull tones to achieve his desired effects of nebulous and layered abstraction.

He is a recipient of the S.H. Raza foundation award and is a part of many important Indian art collections and auctions.

Pushkale has had solo exhibitions in Bhopal (1994), Delhi (1997), Mumbai (2003), and Paris (2003).
His group shows include ones at Gallery Lakeeren, Mumbai (1999), Lalit Kala Akademi, Delhi (2000), NGMA, Mumbai (2001), Gallery Espace, Delhi (2002) and Tao Gallery Mumbai (2003).

Pushkale lives and works in New Delhi.
