Rajan M. Krishnan was born in the Thrissur district of Kerala. Though initially studying economics, Krishnan soon realized his true calling as an artist, and changed paths to pursue his BFA from the Govt. College of Fine Arts in Thiruvananthapuram. Following this he attended the famous M.S. University in Baroda, attained his Master's degree from the Faculty of Fine Arts in 1996.
Observing Krishnan's work, it is clear that he is heavily influenced by his surroundings. As time goes by, the artist is seen to mature alongside his rapidly changing environment. His earlier works are romantic in nature; his subjects are the fertile landscapes and people around him. These works possess an almost naive, blissful quality to them. Sensitive to change, Krishnan's work's evolve to represent a world that is fragmented and ravaged by the current age of consumerism. His works are not only relevant in conveying the contemporary period, they are also striking and a testament to a maturing artist.
In 2000, Krishnan received the State Award for painting from the Kerala Lalith Kala Akademy. His first solo show was held in 2004 in Kochi and was well received. The artist continues to reside and work in Kerala.
