Born in Allahbad, Ashok graduated from Government College of Art and Craft, Kolkata.
Ashok juxstaposes his flattened and abbreviated human figures against dark background. The allegories he uses are those that fluctuate between reality and fantancy. They are mainly inspired by folk art such as Warli painting of the tribals near Mumbai region.
Recently he has incorporated warm colors, bright yellow and deep red with darker background. The figures unabashedly stare at and communicate with the viewers directly and raise voice against set traditional values. He also tries to abridge the gulf between applied and fine arts.
