Hailing from a small village Balti, in West BEngal, Samir grduated from Government Art College,Kolkata in 1975 and searched for a new subject and techniques other than his predecessors. He initially began to depict the flora and fauna and nature in water colours and is credited for reviving the nearly forgotten medium. Realising the limitations of water colours he with studied interest brought the same depth, solidity and expressions as oils, in his several series of paintings. His painterly expertise is evident when he depicts colourful flowers or contours and folds of an aging face. In more than past 25 years he has received many prestigious Awards including AIFACS, New Delhi, West Bengal State Academy Award (twice), The Academy of Fine Arts Award (twice) and A.P. Council of Artists Hyderabad. His works are in collections with many institutions and private collectors worldwide. Samir's most recent exhibitions include "The Faded Manuscript", held at the Jehangir Art Gallery, Mumbai, January 2008. He lives and works in Mumbai.
